Emerald Glen is an important part of Kapiti's history. Nestled in the foothills of the Tararua Ranges, it sits on farmland originally granted to Captain Henry Lynch by a grateful New Zealand Government for his services during the 19th Century. The present homestead was built by his son Ossian Lynch in 1905. For more of the story click here.
On the grounds there are a woolshed and a “whare” (cottage) that date back to the "1850's -60's" which make wonderful subjects for artwork. The woolshed was a popular venue for barn dances over the years, till the combination of candles and strawbales became too greater fire risk! Old newspapers of the era line the wall, including warnings about the imminent outbreak of World War II as European peace negotiations failed.
Miss Eileen Lynch was the eldest child of five and the only daughter of Ossian and Annie Lynch. During WWI she helped her parents run the farm and look after her young twin brothers whilst the two older boys were at the front. Both were snipers and both lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign. One can only speculate what a crushing blow this must have been to the family. Even so, the Lynch family continued to live at Emerald Glen till the late 1960's.
We look forward to seeing you very soon. Harry, Globe, Lulu, Millie and Flossie can't wait to meet you! Accommodation page.
May the mysterious charm of Emerald Glen touch your heart,
may your life be filled with love, laughter and joy!
